If you’re paying very close attention to recent posts, you may notice that the string sound in the background of this random beat are the same as the one in 3_06.  This sound comes from a patch that I created/modified for the “Crystal” soft synth that I have affectionately referred to as “Shitty Strings”.  I like the glitchy, rotten sound that this pad produces – it’s created lots of atmosphere in these two tracks so far.  Because of this, I expect to use this a lot more in future breaks/trip-hop productions.

I’ve noticed that some of the most recent random beats have been increasing in their length.  I would say that it’s because there is a tension in the last few that could not be properly expressed in approximately 2 minutes.

This latest entry to the series contains all the elements of a great hard dance tune:  ravey pianos, a wicked synth line, and a good, tough groove.

I’ve been working on this particular project for almost a year, because I wanted to get the sound just right.  Additionally, this enters the hall of fame of tracks that have crashed my computer, which by my calculation means it’s one of the best ones.

Make sure you turn those subs up for this one, otherwise you’ll miss the deep bassline!  This has an early DEIBC-like quality to it.  Hopefully you’ll agree after you enjoy this tough drum and bass.

Dub music has become an increasingly effective medium for me.  I had lots of fun making the last “pure” dub tune in the random beats series – 1_04.

This new dub tune is still uptempo and modern enough that we can call it dubstep.  It started with the childlike keyboard sound throughout the track.  However, along the way I became tempted to turn up the “whiteboy reggae dial” to 11, which brought in the piano elements.  Overall I’m very pleased with how it turned out.

I present to you some deep, tribal-influenced house music.  There are some good progressive elements in here that build tension until the very end.  I love the way the koto sounds and how it weaves in and out of the foreground.

Chopped up pads are what give this random beat it’s character.  I wasn’t convinced with the melody at first(I originally meant it for a more trance-oriented tune), but I think the free form of the beats and general instrumentation brought it together.  A straight ahead, highly structured trance song would not have been as effective.

It seems fitting that an electronica blog that comes across the number “303″ in any way should probably pay homage to one of the most important pieces of hardware in our culture.

The Roland TB-303‘s influence is undoubtedly widespread in electronic music.  I don’t have one, but I frequently use emulators to try to replicate the famous sounds.  Did you know that the 303 was originally meant as a practice tool for rock musicians?

Today’s entry in the random beats series adds special attention to the 303 sound and pays it’s respects to the acid house movement. I like how well the “dueling basslines” fit together.

This techy drum and bass track started, I think, with the rave stabs you hear through most of the song.  I felt the dub delay on them at about 0:53 really explored the space of the track in an interesting way, and the track built itself out from there.

All that space made things a little empty without something extra to push this along.  The “call and response” basslines in the second part add some much needed lightheartedness to the track, accentuating the rave influence and contrasting the general darkness of the production.
