Rock the Bells EP

The final track in the Rock the Bells EP has been released; it’s entitled “Prism”. This is a dense, foggy piece of dream pop with some 1980s synthesizer vibes.

This does mean that the EP is complete, and the only way to hear the new track is to find it on the album’s page on Bandcamp.

Check the links to Bandcamp below to stream or download the whole album!  As is typically the case, this is a free download.  I hope you find it to be a good value for that price; I had a lot of fun making this album and it’s one of the best ones (even though it’s one of the shortest).

Enjoy.

Karl D – Apex Predator

This one has been brewing for months.  In fact, there’s another version which may or may not be released, and I had a hard time deciding which one to go with.

After near endless tweaks and minor revisions, I’m ready to let this one loose.  This is a dense, assertive drum and bass track (or, “Drumstep” if you like), which is part of the Rock the Bells EPThere’s a theme emerging in this EP, with regards to not only the bells (as intended) but also the dark, heavy basslines.

Graphic Design – dendrite.py

Comparing the cover images for Existential Funk and life.remixed, there is an intentional common thread between the two.  Observe on the images.

This is a very minimal design element, but an intentional hint in both cases, as is the connection.

On the cover of  Existential Funk, there was a “story” in the picture which drew from inspirations around cybernetic neural enhancement.  life.remixed expanded on that slightly, suggesting a technological link with life beyond the extent of humanity.

Lately I had a thought: “what if the process for drawing this for any future designs could be done by the computer”.  So, I wrote a program to do so.  The results speak for themselves:

What is interesting about this, is that designing a program to draw a picture, even one as simple as this, is a sort of  “mathematical proof” for the nature/machine connection that I tried to imply in the earlier graphic designs.  Done by hand previously, I quickly realized “Gee, I wish I wrote this 12 years ago”.

Every time the program is run, a different design emerges.  A few of my favorites are collected on my DeviantArt page.
Source code for the program is available on my GitHub page.

Enjoy.

Karl D – Trigger Warning

Dark, atmospheric stuff. Built on a foundation of the twinkly bells and the big bass drum. This is worth soaking in on a big stereo.

Karl D – No Greater Love (Karl D’s 2016 Remix)

Compared to the original and remix.  Both are from, by my estimation, nearly 15 years ago, practically to the day.

The new version is decidedly trance, although presented at a mild 117 BPM.  This gains some sophistication compared to the original, and loses the feverish pace of the 1st remix.  However, there’s elements of both present in this new version.  I didn’t plan for this to be a part of Rock the Bells but found an opportunity.

The inspiration of publishing another remix of this came quickly in the last several weeks. Presidential politics makes for a dim example of “leadership” in our society, and we really shouldn’t aspire to be quite so savage to one another.  That’s not even addressing the character flaws of any individual politician.

The message I’m trying to reiterate with this release is one of positivity, that civilized society breaks down when we forget how to be civil.  In short, “Be excellent to each other“.

Karl D – Nightmare

I’m working on a short EP release called Rock the Bells, featuring a few tracks containing a common theme – you guessed it, bells.  The EP isn’t done yet, but I’m happy to offer the first track from this release, as it seems slightly Halloween appropriate to do so.

Melodically speaking, this draws a bit of (somewhat conscious) influence from the “Halloween” theme music, although it dosen’t sample it directly.  I’m so pleased with the way this turned out, and it definitely has a spooky, dark vibe perfect for a Halloween party!

Karl D – Highway Battle

Been a long summer without publishing anything, and I have a few things that I’ve just been sitting on.  So, without further ado…

Today’s selection is a breaks track, with a heavy acid bassline holding the whole thing together.

Also included is a remix including vocals from Eddie Amador’s classic “Rise” – this brought a little extra character to what is, as is almost always the case in my productions, an instrumental.  This was an early inclusion during production, and I think it fits well, but I made a concious decision not to center the track around this; this is therefore not really a remix of “Rise” itself but rather an addition.

randombeats.com Mix Series 08: METAPHYSICS – A Journey Through Another Dimension of Hip Hop

I find it hard to believe that it’s been almost 2 years since the last entry in the Mix Series, and yet here we are.

As it happens, this mix has been brewing for quite a bit of that time – from conception, this mix has been several months in the making.  I knew I wanted to do a hip hop mix eventually, but (admittedly) it’s not my format, which meant I had to take a lot of time to build up my library.

My involvement with electronic music in general started with turntablism, so I’ve always recognized the influence that hip hop has had on electronic music.  In an interesting (and unexpected, to me) turn, modern hip hop has evolved in the last several years to include more techno elements.

Almost all of the tracks here are new exclusives – nearly every one was made specifically for this mix.  Some may consider most of the tracks to be a bit leftfield, but it’s one I consider modern, with my own unique voice.  Like all of the mixes I do, this is an opportunity to create and a “snapshot in time”.

At the collision of hip hop and techno, there is a new dimension of music.  This is METAPHYSICS.
